JONESBOROUGH REPERTORY THEATRE |
January 20-22, 2006
The Jonesborough Repertory Theatre proudly welcomed the Appalachian Regional Theatre Society (ARTS) from Hazard, Kentucky as they presented Smoke on the Mountain conceived by Alan Bailey and written by Connie Ray. Performances were scheduled January 20 through January 22, 2006.
Smoke on the Mountain has enjoyed critical acclaim and sold-out performances. This ARTS abbreviated version of Smoke on the Mountain was a one-hour, laugh-out-loud experience for the entire family.
This production won the Kentucky Theatre Association state competition and will represented the state of Kentucky at the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) held in Orlando, Florida in that March. The play competed against community productions from Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
Ray’s production was first performed at Princeton University. The year is 1938.
It's Saturday night in Mount Pleasant, NC and the Reverend Oglethorpe has invited the Sanders Family Singers to provide an uplifting evening of singin' and witnessin'. The audience is invited to pull up a pew and join in the rollicking good time. Numerous songs and hilarious stories from the more or less devout Sanders provide a richly entertaining evening that has audiences clapping, singing, laughing and cheering.
The Hazard presentation, directed by Carol Combs, stared Ron Reed as Burl Sanders; Teresa Reed as his wife, Vera Sanders; Robert Campbell as Stanley Sanders; Nancy Collins as June Sanders; Beth Wicker and Markie Fields as twins, Denise and Dennis Sanders and John Hansen as Rev. Mervin Oglethorpe.
Teresa Reed was selected as the Kentucky competition's best actress. Helen Wicker costumed the cast, Mark Fields provided technical support and Susan Johnson provided hairstyles and make-up.
It was fun to join the Sanders family for a celebration of old time religion!
