In 1943, lyricist Oscar Hammerstein joined forces with Richard Rodgers to write “Oklahoma!” Together, they created “Carousel,” “State Fair,” “South Pacific,” “The King and I” and “Sound of Music.”
The Jonesborough Repertory Theatre will continue its salute to Rodgers and Hammerstein tonight, Sunday, Monday and next weekend with its production of “A Grand Night for Singing,” which opened Thursday.
The muscial revue includes tunes from the aforementioned plays along with “ones you’ve never heard of,” co-director Kathleen Buttolph said.
She and co-director Brian Ponder have assembled a cast of 15 performers including Josh Baldwin, Chalmer Harper, Mike Imboden, Bill Reese, Paul Seay, Don Squibb, Mary Blair, Buttolph, Becky Harris, Beth Hearn, Susan Imboden, Lisa Messimer, Vanessa Persson, Shelyne Ponder and Sharon Squibb.
“We ended up with a lot of talented singers,” Buttolph said. “We have an amazing group of vocalists from all backgrounds of music.”
Musical Director Imboden managed to spread the wealth when it came time to assign solos, Buttolph said. This production is truly an ensemble effort.
“Everybody’s a star. Everybody’s got the same number of solos,” she said.
Barbara Knisley and David Gross are the accompanists.
