Louisa May Alcott’s classic “Little Women”
comes alive in song as the four March sisters and their beloved Marmee
keep the home fires going in Concord, Massachusetts, as the father is
away serving as a Union Army chaplain during the Civil War. Josephine
(Jo) is the brassy, tomboy-like aspiring writer. Meg is the romantic.
Amy is the pretentious one. Beth is considered the kind-hearted one of
the girls. The play moves along as the audience gets snapshots of the
lives of the March family inter-cut with short stories Josephine writes
in her attic studio. The play starts with Jo away from home trying to
get her writing career going. She wonders if she’d be more successful if
she was at home and causes her to think of times past with her family over
the past three years. After her reminiscing, she comes back to the
present and finds out her sister Beth has scarlet fever and she quickly
returns home. Jo finds out how important family is in the end.
