Drama Classes Offered at the JRT

WHAT WE OFFER

The educational opportunities provided through the Jonesborough Repertory Theatre include the following.

Theatre classes – JRT began a full season of educational programming for young people in the summer of 2005. The program is dedicated to help prepare and teach young people who are interested in stage performance, preparing for college theatre, and pursuing the professional world of performing arts.

Classes are designed for students who want to explore the different aspects of play production and gain acting skills. Classes will learn vocabulary, stage directions, and the layout of a typical theatre. Through the use of drama games and many other activities, students will actively study to improve skills in stage voice/projection, movement, character development, improvisation, scene studies/design, playwriting, storytelling and auditioning. All the while, students will be improving their communication, listening skills, group cooperation, awareness, and confidence.

"The 2006/2007 school year was a groundbreaking year for JRT’s young people," says Artistic Director, Kathleen Brannon Buttolph. "We are looking forward to the expansion of our program in 2007 and beyond."

JRT’s drama students have performed in many venues - area elementary and middle schools; festival street performances; and at the National Storytelling Festival in 2006. Students have also performed at local schools and assisted living communities.

Transformative Theatre! – This year the JRT will start an exciting partnership with ACTUALeyes productions and will be offering a Transformative Theatre Performing Arts program. In this program students will work for 12 weeks using theatre techniques and improvisation to explore their lives and issues relevant to their age (i.e. self-esteem, body image, bullying, friendship, etc.). Students will create a theatre piece which will be performed for the public. Students learn basic performance skills, gain greater self-awareness, confidence, and self- expression. All the while, students will be improving their communication, listening skills, group cooperation, and building empathy. Click here to look at the 2008 class.

Workshops/Performances – Concentrated learning opportunities are offered that are geared around specific performances on the JRT Stage. These opportunities can be for youth and adults or can be all-youth productions. Instructors/Directors spend time teaching young participants techniques in acting, set design, make-up, etc., specific to the production.

Touring Theater – Successful productions with young actors are frequently formulated to “tour” locally in schools and stage venues in other communities. For example, a recent JRT production of The Jack Tales was performed in some Johnson City Schools and also at the Tennessee Theater Association competition at ETSU. Even though the JRT theater troupe was the only company with young performers, the “Jack Tale Players” received an Award of Excellence from the American Association of Community Theatre at the Tennessee Theatre Association’s Competition held at East Tennessee State University in 2006.

Script Writing – A workshop opportunity is provided each year in script writing.; JRT students participate in the Young Playwright Festival competition directed through the Barter Theater.
