Jonesborough Repertory TheatreEducational Program |
The Arts are a critical component of the educational and
learning process. The JRT is committed to providing opportunities to improve
their lives through their exposure to, involvement in, and knowledge of the
Arts. JRT has held a full season of educational programming for young people
since the summer of 2005.

High School Drama Class
rehearsing The Jack Tales
JRT Classes are fun, interactive courses for
kindergarten thru 12th grade students who have just been introduced to
theatre or are looking to grow as performers of the stage. Classes include
various avenues of theatre ranging from pantomime and improvisational games
to developing listening and story-building skills – from theatre basics to
auditioning at the professional level or for college and community theatre.

K-2nd grade Drama Class
The focus of the Jonesborough Repertory Theatre’s educational program is to provide students with a broad exposure to theater and the numerous creative disciplines that are associated with performance. Students will learn vocabulary, stage directions, and the layout of a typical theatre. Through the us of drama games, improvisation, and scene study among other activities, students will actively work toward improving skills in pantomime, stage voice/projection, movement, musical theatre, dance, character development, design, playwriting, storytelling and auditioning. In addition, students will be improving speaking and listening skills, group cooperation, self-awareness, and confidence.
A workshop opportunity is provided each year in
script writing. JRT students participate in the Young Playwright
Festival competition directed through the Barter Theater.

Drama Camp production of James and the Giant Peach
Occasionally, successful productions with young actors
are formulated to tour locally in schools and stage venues in other
communities. The JRT production of The Jack Tales was performed in
some Johnson City Schools and also at the Tennessee Theater Association
competition at East Tennessee State University. The Jack Tale Players
received an Award of Excellence from the American Association of Community
Theatre at the Tennessee Theatre Association’s Competition held at ETSU in
2006.
